The short version
One of those Newcastle cafés where you intend to grab a quick coffee and somehow find yourself still sitting there an hour later ordering something else.
Autumn Rooms has been part of Darby Street for almost eight years, serving seasonal brunch, specialty coffee and the increasingly rare luxury of actual table service.
Basically: sit down and let somebody look after you for a change.
Why GDS loves them
Great food, very good coffee and a strong neighbourhood-café energy.
They're big on thoughtful hospitality rather than getting you fed, caffeinated and ejected from the premises in seven minutes.
We respect this.

PRAISE JOE
Location: Tighes Hill
The short version
A neighbourhood café that knows your name, your coffee order and — presumably — which member of the household is actually in charge.
Spoiler: it's the dog.
Praise Joe serves Pablo & Rusty's coffee alongside pastries, cakes, toasties and other things that make walking past considerably more difficult than anticipated.
Why GDS loves them
Their Tighes Hill café genuinely welcomes dogs in the outdoor seating area.
Even better, it's right around the corner from Islington Dog Park, creating the very efficient combination of:
Dog gets exercise. Human gets coffee. Everyone stops complaining.

THE PAVEMENT SOCIETY
Location: Boolaroo
The short version
Coffee. Toasties. Dogs.
We could probably finish the listing there.
The Pavement Society is a small neighbourhood coffee and toastie bar in Boolaroo with outdoor seating where dogs are welcome.
It's the sort of place that understands a café doesn't need a 14-page menu. Sometimes you just need good coffee, a serious toastie and somewhere your dog can sit beside you looking hopeful.
Why GDS loves them
They're local, community-focused and properly dog-friendly.
Dogs can join you at the outdoor tables, making it an excellent stop before or after a Lake Macquarie wander.
Also: coffee and toasties.
We remain extremely easy to impress when the fundamentals are this strong.
