The short version
One of those Newcastle cafés where you intend to grab a quick coffee and somehow find yourself still sitting there an hour later ordering something else.
Autumn Rooms has been part of Darby Street for almost eight years, serving seasonal brunch, specialty coffee and the increasingly rare luxury of actual table service.
Basically: sit down and let somebody look after you for a change.
PRAISE JOE
Location: Tighes Hill
The short version
A neighbourhood café that knows your name, your coffee order and — presumably — which member of the household is actually in charge.
Spoiler: it's the dog.
Praise Joe serves Pablo & Rusty's coffee alongside pastries, cakes, toasties and other things that make walking past considerably more difficult than anticipated.
Why GDS loves them
Their Tighes Hill café genuinely welcomes dogs in the outdoor seating area.
Even better, it's right around the corner from Islington Dog Park, creating the very efficient combination of:

The short version
Coffee. Toasties. Dogs.
We could probably finish the listing there.
The Pavement Society is a small neighbourhood coffee and toastie bar in Boolaroo with outdoor seating where dogs are welcome.
It's the sort of place that understands a café doesn't need a 14-page menu. Sometimes you just need good coffee, a serious toastie and somewhere your dog can sit beside you looking hopeful.

They're local, community-focused and properly dog-friendly.
Dogs can join you at the outdoor tables, making it an excellent stop before or after a Lake Macquarie wander.
Also: coffee and toasties.
We remain extremely easy to impress when the fundamentals are this strong.

HARRY & LOLA’S
Location: Speers Point
The short version
A lakeside café at Speers Point Park where the dogs are very much part of the clientele.
Harry & Lola's serves specialty coffee, toasties, bowls and baked goods from their spot inside MAP mima, with a covered outdoor deck overlooking Lake Macquarie.
Dogs get water bowls, their own treats and the opportunity to make the Paw of Fame wall.
As it should be.
Why GDS loves them
They haven't just put a water bowl outside and called themselves dog-friendly.
Dogs are genuinely welcomed here, with outdoor seating, treats and plenty of parkland around for a walk before or after.
It's also right near Speers Point Fenced Dog Park.

PEGS CAFE
Location: Whitebridge
The short version
A Whitebridge favourite conveniently positioned beside the Fernleigh Track, making it an excellent place to stop for coffee, breakfast or lunch with your dog.
Pegs Cafe is a relaxed, family-run spot serving cafe favourites, fresh cakes and plenty of reasons to extend what was supposed to be a quick walk.
The dog gets exercise. You get coffee and possibly cheesecake. Everyone benefits.
Why GDS loves them
Location, location, location. And cake.
Being right beside the Fernleigh Track makes Pegs an easy addition to a morning dog walk, whether you're heading out for a decent stretch or just enough exercise to justify breakfast.
Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables, and the cafe has built a loyal following for its friendly service, generous food and homemade-style treats.
We particularly appreciate a cafe that makes walking the dog feel like a perfectly reasonable excuse to order cheesecake.

ROSIE & SHELL
Location: New Lambton
The short version
Part coffee stop, part lifestyle store and a very good reason to take the dog for a walk.
Rosie and Shell is a New Lambton coffee caravan and homewares store, serving good coffee from their rather charming retro caravan, Frankie.
Coffee for you. Treat for the dog. Possibly something for the house that you absolutely didn't need.
Why GDS loves them
Rosie and Shell welcomes dogs in its outdoor seating area, makes its own dog treats and has even been known to greet regular canine customers by name.
They're also serving Supreme Coffee, with a lifestyle store attached for anyone who enjoys combining their morning caffeine with a little unnecessary shopping.
The dog gets a treat. You leave with a candle. Nobody saw it coming.
