On The Good List:

ADAMSTOWN BOWLING CLUB

The short version

A proper local bowlo with a big beer garden, cold drinks, good pub food and, importantly, a place for the dog.

Because leaving the dog at home just to have a schooner seems unnecessary.

Why GDS loves them

There's plenty of space to settle in with your dog while you enjoy a drink, grab something from the bistro or catch some live music.

They've also got barefoot bowls, regular entertainment and a strong community club atmosphere.

A local institution that understands the dog is part of the social calendar.

THE BENNETT

Location: Hamilton

The short version

A proper neighbourhood pub tucked away in the backstreets of Hamilton, with a big beer garden, good food and plenty of reasons to stay for another drink.

The Bennett has been around since 1865, although it's had a fairly impressive makeover since then. Think classic local pub atmosphere, a leafy outdoor courtyard and a menu that goes well beyond the usual schnitty.

The dog can supervise proceedings. As usual.

Why GDS loves them

The Bennett has managed to keep the feel of a proper local while giving people a genuinely lovely place to settle in for an afternoon.

The spacious beer garden, lined with olive trees, is a standout. Add plenty of beers on tap, good food and live sport, and you've got a pretty convincing argument for cancelling your other plans.

Our menu recommendation? The Donburi Bowl with Karaage Chicken. Excellent choice for the human, while the dog keeps a very close eye on the chicken situation.

If you're feeling generous, a tiny piece of plain, unseasoned chicken for the dog. They'll naturally assume the entire meal was ordered for them.

Things you need to know

📍 146 Denison Street, Hamilton
🐕 Welcome in the beer garden
🍺 24 beers on tap, cocktails and wine
🍽️ Seasonal pub menu, lunch and dinner seven days a week
🌿 Large, leafy beer garden with approximately 120 seats

🏉 Big screens for live sport, including a 100-inch video wall
🕐 Monday–Saturday 11am–late; Sunday 11am–10pm
⭐ All-day dining on weekends and rotating lunch specials

Good for: Long lunches, afternoon drinks, catching the footy, weekend catch-ups and anyone who appreciates a good neighbourhood pub with a proper beer garden.

GDS verdict: Order the Donburi Bowl. The dog will be monitoring the chicken situation closely.

With ocean views, relaxed outdoor dining and a menu featuring everything from seafood to pub favourites, it's an easy choice when you want to make a day of it.
