HORSESHOE BEACH
Location: Newcastle East | Off-leash beach
The short version
Newcastle's designated dog beach, tucked inside the harbour near Nobbys.
Sheltered water, harbour views and a beach full of dogs having what is objectively a better day than most people at work.
A Newcastle dog-owner staple.
Why GDS loves it
The harbour location means the water is generally more protected than an open surf beach, making Horseshoe a great option for dogs who like a swim without necessarily wanting to take on the Pacific Ocean.
It's also spectacularly Newcastle.
Dogs in the water. Nobbys in the background. Cargo ships cruising past.
Very difficult to improve upon.

REDHEAD BEACH
Location: Redhead | Off-leash beach south of Second Creek
The short version
For dogs who consider Horseshoe Beach insufficiently dramatic.
Redhead gives you proper ocean, proper sand and a large stretch of beach where dogs can run off-leash.
Excellent for a long beach walk.
Also excellent for returning home with approximately half the beach inside your car.
Why GDS loves it
Space.
The designated off-leash section south of Second Creek gives dogs plenty of room for running, swimming and generally behaving like nobody has ever allowed them outside before.
It's particularly good for dogs who want more of an adventure than a quick lap of the local park.
Things you need to know
📍 Where: Redhead Beach — access via the Cain Street area
🐕 Dogs: Off-leash south of Second Creek
🕐 When: Leash-free at all times in the designated area
🚫 Important: Dogs are prohibited north of Second Creek, including the section between First and Second Creek
🌊 Water: Open surf — conditions matter
🚧 Fencing: None. This is a beach, not a containment strategy.
💧 Bring: Fresh drinking water, bowl and poo bags
Good for
Long runs, confident beach dogs, swimming and dogs with reliable recall.

Big beach. Big run. Absolutely catastrophic amount of sand in the car.
KING EDWARD PARK
Location: Newcastle | Designated off-leash area
The short version
Possibly one of the more scenic places in Newcastle for your dog to completely ignore the view.
King Edward Park has a designated off-leash grassed area with sweeping ocean views from the headland.
You will appreciate them.
Your dog has found a stick.
Why GDS loves it
It's a genuinely beautiful spot and gives you something different from the usual fenced dog park.
There's open grass for a run, plenty of surrounding scenery and you're right in the middle of Newcastle's coastline.
Ideal when both dog and human could stand to get out of the house.
Things you need to know

🕐 When: Newcastle's standard designated leash-free areas operate between sunrise and sunset
🚧 Fencing: Unfenced — reliable recall matters

Good for
Off-leash runs, dogs with solid recall, ocean views and getting some fresh air whether anyone asked for it or not.

Scenic for you. Sniffy for them.
FERNLEIGH TRACK
Location: Adamstown → Belmont | On-lead shared path
The short version
Fifteen kilometres of bushland, old railway corridor, wetlands and the historic Fernleigh Tunnel connecting Newcastle with Lake Macquarie.
You absolutely do not have to walk all 15 kilometres.
Your dog doesn't know that.
Why GDS loves it
Fernleigh gives you the feeling of getting properly out into the bush without having to drive halfway across NSW.
The old railway corridor makes for relatively gentle gradients, there's plenty of greenery and you can choose anything from a short wander to a considerably more ambitious outing.
And walking through the old railway tunnel with your dog is objectively pretty great.
Things you need to know
📍 Where: Adamstown to Belmont
📏 Distance: Around 15km end to end
🐕 Dogs: Welcome on a short lead and under control
🚲 Important: It's a shared path — expect bikes, runners and other walkers
🌳 Terrain: Sealed path through bushland and wetland areas
🚂 Highlight: The 181m Fernleigh Tunnel
🚗 Access: Multiple entry points including Adamstown, Kahibah, Whitebridge, Redhead, Jewells and Belmont
💧 Bring: Water, particularly if you're doing a longer section
Good for
Long walks, on-lead exercise, sniffers, active dogs and humans who said "we'll just do a little bit" three kilometres ago.
The GDS verdict
Turn around whenever you like. This information becomes increasingly important the further you walk.
SPEERS POINT FENCED DOG PARK
Location: Speers Point | Fully fenced off-leash
The short version
For anyone whose dog hears the words "come here" and considers them more of a suggestion.
Speers Point has a large, fully fenced off-leash dog area within the broader lakeside park.
Open space, agility equipment and significantly fewer opportunities for your dog to disappear over the horizon.
Why GDS loves it
The fence.
We also like the location, space and facilities.
But mostly:
The fence.
It's a particularly useful option for dogs who need room to run but aren't candidates for the trust-based arrangement required at an unfenced off-leash area.
There's also agility equipment, seating and water available, with the Lake Macquarie foreshore right outside for an on-lead wander afterwards.

🐕 Dogs: Off-leash inside the designated fenced area
🔒 Fencing: Fully fenced
🕐 When: Leash-free at all times
🎾 Inside: Open running space and agility stations
💧 Water: Dog and human drinking facilities available
🌳 Shade: Some shade, although parts of the park are exposed
🌧️ After rain: Things can get muddy. Adjust your expectations accordingly.
🦮 Outside the enclosure: The wider Speers Point Park isn't an off-leash area, so lead back on
Good for
Zoomies, social dogs, dogs with questionable recall and owners who enjoy the psychological comfort of a physical boundary.
